Professional Hopes and Goals

The world has come more and more diverse with economy expanding, coming with it, there are more and more cooperation and moving within people from all around the world. It is no strange that you live in a community where people are in different colors, speaking different languages, and have different costumes. Our young generation lives in such a fast-changing and connecting world, one hope I have when working with children and families from diverse backgrounds is: keep open-minded, understanding and respecting everyone, everything happened.
A goal is to promote equity education to every child who is willing to learn but may lack of resources or financial support.
I appreciate a lot for every peers’ support and generous sharing of their experience, perspective, and knowledge. I benefit a lot from it, and inspires me to explore in the early childhood field. All the best to everyone’s future learning.

Welcoming Families From Around the World

Supposed I worked in the Child Care Center, and one day I had a new child coming from Luxembourg joining us. I’d like to let them feel welcomed and I need to prepare myself to culturally response towards the family. After checking from internet, I found out people there speak French, German and Luxembourgish. I will learn how to say “hello” in Luxembourgish, and give them the feeling of connection. I will download their national anthem and play it for them. I will get some Chinese rose since it is their national flower. I know they like French and German food, I will prepare some as well. I will invite the family to have a long lunch together on the first day, and talk to them as long as possible.
I hope I can have good connection with the child and their family, so that I can get support from them, make my work easy. I think it is also important for the family and the child to feel welcomed, so they can be relaxed and feel they are a part of the community.

the oppression

The first oppression coming to my mind is how the so-called City Inspector staffs treat the itinerant hawkers. There are always news report in recent years that the inspectors beat the itinerant hawkers, how they treat them without personalization. They are like rubbers, they even don’t care about people’s life, no matter dignity or respect.
The inspectors want to keep the city “in order”, keep the streets clean, but they forget there are some people who are poor, they don’t have the ability to get a decent job, and they need to make a living in the cities. It is unfair to expel them from the cities, since maybe they have no home to return to.
This kind of news always make me sad and angry, I think the society need to be fairer to the poor people. The government needs to create more job opportunities for the poor people, and help them to learn skills of making a living.

Microaggression

After breakfast today, two colleagues Anne, Bryan and I went back to the office together. On the way back, Anne said my profile picture on Wechat looked much thinner than now. And she said she couldn’t imagine it and laughed. I told her I become plump because I was pregnant, gave birth to my son and age issue, I told her I never felt how fat I am because I was very thin before. Bryan said he knew a joke about a couple of a fat man and a ugly woman. The couple fought a day, the fat man told the ugly woman I was thin before, but you…!
Well, I know they were joke and they have no idea of how this word would let me feel. I kept thinking about their words for few hours, and made my mind to lose weight, and doubting about if I am really “fat”?
For the three forms of microagression, microassaults, microinsults, microinvalitation mentioned in this week’s video, I felt like I was microinsulted. I become more sensitive about people’s language, and try to keep myself away from the sterotyping.

culture and diversity

I talked to a visiting professor of our school, a student who is from U.S., and a local Chinese language teacher.
They all talked about that their present culture is much different from where they were born. And they struggled a lot to fit themselves in. Their family and the community they live in request differently to them.

The student said several teachers are the fans of celebrating birthdays and holidays but some teachers ignore those a lot. This makes him confused a lot.

Culture is much more complex than I thought and you may see an Asian face but with very American thinking styles. I must be very careful and do not sterotype anyone.

My Family Culture

If I have to leave China and could never come back, and I can take three items from China to be with me, though it’s very hard to choose, but I will choose a pair of shoe-pad made by my mother, a DVD of Kun Opera, and a cheongsam.
A pair of shoe pad made by my mother means a lot. It let me feel I am connected with my family, the warmth accompanies me, and remind of myself where my spirit is. Choosing A DVD of Kun Opera, first because I love music and opera, second, it shows the history of China, how my ancestor thought and expressed themselves, it made me know my own history and I can introduce to the people in the new country our opera culture and Chinese history. And let me know how much I am proud of being a Chinese.
Cheongsam is what I love to dress. Cheongsam is a sign of being Chinese woman, it is as beautiful as peony, and remind of being tender but strong-hearted.
If I was told I could only keep one, I will feel my wholeness is torn into parts, I will lose some identities of mine.
This exercise is so meaning to me. I have not thought about my country culture and my connection to my own culture so deeply before. I love my country, but never have to idea why I love and which part I love. And I never thought about the deep influence the culture I am from taken to me. Through these two weeks exploring about my social identity, I feel all the pieces happened to me connected into whole. The journey in this course is so wonderful.

reflection of what I have learnt in Early Childhood Research

Research is not so far away from ordinary life. People starts to investigate the world from born. Research could be a small issue or a big social problem in early childhood. Before I started the course, I thought research is like Himalaya mountain for me, I really don't think I could get through the course. But with the study going on, with the tasks finished, Professor Todd's instruction and comment, and the colleagues's discussion and help, I survived.
Research plan and design is very important before implementing the research. And during the research, the ethic issue must be taken care of before any research. I did meet a lot of challenges during the study. I am not familiar with the early childhood field, I have no idea about research and the terminologies are unfamiliar to me. Well, everything is new to me in early childhood research. I did take some time to read some Chinese version research books, and compare them with the English textbook.
An early childhood expert takes care of the daily work and also need to synthesis the scientific experience, and most importantly, through their "action research", the experts can share their knowledge and findings with the society especially anyone who have something to do with the children. All for the children!

European Early Childhood Education Research Association

I have explored the website of European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA) this week to understand more research topics in early childhood this week.
EECERA seeks to sustain and develop the rich tradition of European early childhood thought, the legacy of Pestalozzi, Owen, Froebel, Steiner, Vygotsky, Piaget, Malaguzzi and other pioneers, whilst looking forward to encourage the exploration of new paradigms, methodologies, concepts and applications in the ever-changing context of early childhood studies. Its reach and interest is resolutely international and, whilst wanting to identify with Europe’s pluralist and diverse cultures, it is open to learn of, and to share in, the equally rich early childhood traditions and concepts of the World.
From Volume 23, issue 2, 2015, its journal European Early Childhood Education Research Journal, their interested research topics including children’s cognitive development, Using ICT in early childhood education, Cultural learning, teaching and learning in outdoor activities etc. The journal content is quite diverse in different areas.

I thought it focused on European early childhood field, but surprisingly, it is quite international. It is also have contacts in China that I can continue to work with.

A ideal research about new mother staying at home with the new-born child for 3 years

We all know that it is important for the babies to have safe attachment to he main carers, and the most important relationship is with the mother. Some researchers advocate for long-time accompany, some said high-quality accompany is more important than long-time.

In China, the woman staff has 3-month maternity leave starting from the day she asks for leave, it means they have to go back to work when the baby is about 3 months old. It takes big problems to the baby and to the new mother. The mother has to balance the caring of the baby and the work, sometimes they still breast feed the baby and carry the "food " to the baby every day. The baby has to be taken care of by other(s), and the safe attachment sometimes are not so strong with the mother. This will take serious emotional and social influence to the child when he/she grows up, they may feel it is difficult to trust people.

So this research is to find out the importance of the new mother's accompany to the child, and find the evidence to show that the government should give at least 3 years holiday to the new mother, staying at home and be with the child.

My Personal Research Journey

I choose the following three areas to do more investigation.
1. Ways to foster healthy social emotional development in toddlers
2. How the arts help children develop social-emotionally in healthy ways
3. The influence of sibling relationships on preschool children’s social-emotional development.
When I was young, my parents cared little about my emotions and feelings, the influences are much more profound than I expected. Till now, sometimes I lose temper quickly and don’t have strong connections with people’s feelings, and afraid of being neglected. For children’s well-beings, physical development and cognitive development are measurable, easier to practice than emotional and social development. The recent tendency of education is also highly focus on cultivating students’ emotional and social development.
I am not sure where to locate the information yet till now. I will be very grateful if any my colleague(s) could give me any suggestions. I hope I can make it for the research.

Reflection post for 6162

It is a pleasant and fast journey to learn from peers who are from different parts of the world. Both Kate and Rose inspires me a lot for continuing exploring the EC filed. I am so grateful for their sharing about their profession. I am still not a EC practitioner, but from learning from them, I gained a lot.

For example, every EC practitioner is for the well-being of the children, no matter where they are from. Second, love and caring are the first for being with children, I can see it from them. Third, there are so many challenges for the EC practitioners. We hope all the society can understand and support us for it.

Poverty is one of the international awareness of the issues and trends, we should work together for solving the problem for the children, our future!

The dream as EC professionals

The following are the responses from Kate Turner. For professional growth, she let me feel once we have an aim, looking for fulfill the task will be alright. Thanks so much for the dream sharing, she inspires me to think about my dream and goals more clearly and let me move forward.
  • What issues regarding quality and early childhood professionals are being discussed where you live and work?
There are many issues regarding quality where I live and work.  We do not have many highly qualified applicants for a special needs preschool position when needed, as it requires an additional endorsement and more classwork.  This limits the amount of highly qualified preschool teachers when they are hired, which then requires the new teachers to return to school to achieve the additional endorsement and lessen their focus to the classroom.  We also have had some teachers who were highly qualified to begin with, and who were terrible once in the classroom.  We have once had a teacher (for only a year) who would state that she didn't like kids or anything about kids.  She wouldn't touch or go near children with snotty noses or help with rest-rooming the children.  It was sad.
  • What opportunities and/or requirements for professional development exist?
Because I teach in a public school setting and am hired by a public school district to teach preschool, we have multiple opportunities to professional development.  However, it is whatever the school sees fit for the building of preK-5 teachers so it is not often very applicable to my own needs for professional development.  Typically, our special education director (who oversees all special education teachers preK-grade 12) will approve many free professional development courses through our local support team that is about an hour away.  She doesn't always approve ones that will cost additional funds.  Our program requires us to have so many hours per year (I am unable to recall the exact amount), and to continue renewing our licenses through the state, we have to show a certain amount of hours spent in professional development.
  • What are some of your professional goals?
I would love to one day become more active in my role as a leader in the preschool program.  While I currently am a teacher, I would love to be able to be a program director or administrator so that I could help support teachers from a more knowledgeable viewpoint.  I become frustrated with how preschool is not always held so highly when compared to the rest of the grade levels when it is the foundation, so one of my goals would be to educate others as to the importance of preschool education.
  • What are some of your professional hopes, dreams, and challenges?
Same as above!  :)  My dreams were once to open my own preschool and run it the way I believe it should; with teachers who are highly qualified and highly valued by administrators and children who love to learn and need help.  My challenges are the constraints I feel currently by administration, I hate jumping through all of the hoops to prove a child needs help when it is so clear from the beginning.  Another challenge is funds--we could do so much more with more funding to our program.  Everything we ask to do always comes down to how much it will cost the program.  It would be a dream to not have to worry about that at all!  :)

Below is from another colleague Rose.

  • What are some of your professional hopes, dreams, and challenges?

My professional hopes and dreams are that I would like to run my own preschool and learning center. I enjoy working in the classroom currently because it gives me the chance to learn more about how the children grow and learn. I feel we can learn so much more from the children than just reading a book. I know this will be challenging because working as a director of a center can be very stressful. I think the biggest challenge would be finding good and reliable teachers for the three age groups, infants, toddlers, and preschool. At this moment i just hope to grow as a teacher and be successful in my classroom. I want to be sure the children in my class get all the chances to grow and learn as possible each and every day.

education equity in research

I tried to find out researches in early childhood field in China from internet, but I found very little web site providing research results, but some commercial organizations using some overseas research to advocate for their caring programs. So I checked NIEER(http://nieer.org/) this week to understand the recent researches especially equity in United States. I found out what they research are quite through, they provide researches in “Access, assessment, quality and curriculum, special education, economics and finance, state pre-k evaluations, English language learners…”, it is quite interesting to look at the information, and reflect about why I can not find anything like this in China.

When I read the news 10-Year National Preschool Study Finds Decreased Support for Quality and Greater Disparities in Access, I found out some similar situations like what happened in China, for example:

  • “Enrollment increased dramatically for 4-year-olds over the decade, but funding did not keep pace. The recession led many states to limit funding, intensifying a long-term trend in the wrong direction.  State expenditure per child fell by more than $1,100, adjusting for inflation.
  • Access to quality preschool education heavily depends on where a child lives. Ten states do not fund pre-K. Among those that do fund pre-K, enrollment, standards, and funding differ in the extreme. Without federal action these interstate inequalities are likely to persist.
  • States have far less data available to inform policy regarding their preschool programs and the children they serve than they do for K-12 education. For example, many states cannot report enrollment for children by ethnic background, home language, or family income.”

It gives me a broader viewpoints to check the quality in early childhood field from different aspects. Things are interconnections with each other, when we talking about EC field, we need to check economics, politics, and other different kinds of aspects to thoroughly understand it.

Exploring 3 things in Harvard University Early Childhood Development initials

I choose to explore something from Harvard University Early Childhood Development Center.

They have a program in Brazil to help the community there to use scientific knowledge to children build up a strong foundation for lifelong healthy.

Another program,Saving Brains, "The Saving Brains portfolio of activities is designed to develop and broaden the reach of products, services, and policies that protect and nurture early brain development. Its activities work to support the lifelong health of children and provide selected countries with a strategy to help break the cycle of poverty.  "

Third, "The Global Children's Initiative (GCI) provides support to research activities led by affiliated faculty members of the Center who work closely with researchers and institutions in low- and middle-income countries around the world. Each project has fostered interdisciplinary collaboration to generate new evidence and insights about how child development unfolds in diverse cultural contexts."

It is quite exciting to know that one of the best universities in the world not only doing research but have practical programs in early childhood areas.

Creative thinking, problem solving and other skills need to be cultivated besides STEM

There is a news drew my attention from ACEI. Here is the link: http://www.acei.org/global-news/educating-for-the-future.

For decades, Chinese students are good at tests and the schools focus on cultivating students' ability of memorizing knowledge, information and facts. As for the economy develops, the country advocates for cultivating creative thinking and innovative workforce in recently years. And the school education are widely criticized by the society and parents.

For past 5 years, the organization I work for are dedicated to teacher training, help the teachers to understand and use personalized teaching to the students, so the students will have the ability to solve problem, critical thinking and have the global competency.

It seems that this is the trend of every country to help students reach their own potential, to teach them creative thinking, critical thinking, collaborative working, etc.
Young children learn problem solving and critical thinking through play and unstructured interaction with their peers and adults. Through children’s literature and games, young people learn how to look at problems from all angles, how to use interpersonal skills to form relationships, and the critical thinking skills to help them determine right from wrong. Research demonstrates that children benefit much more from play, self-guided exploration, and peer-to-peer interaction than from lectures and rote memorization exercises. - See more at: http://www.acei.org/global-news/educating-for-the-future#sthash.DA9tdk5W.dpuf

My learning exchange with two colleagues

I have two discussions with my colleagues, Rose and Kate. We exchanged emails to give each other information. Through the information exchange, I explored the information from their own communities, and understand more about poverty.
Here are the information dear Rose and Kate gave me:
"A little information about myself. I live in Stamford, CT. I have a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies. I have done community service helping children in low-income families. I was a mentor and I helped children who were not getting the support they needed at home, and I would meet with the student once a week, these were low-income families.  Now I work at a Preschool and I am a toddler teacher for children 18months to 3 years old. The families I work with relatively have good jobs and are well established. There are some families that receive Care 4 Kids assistance, this assistance for families who need child care but can not afford to pay for it on their own.
Where I live and work it is considered an expensive city to live in. Some people who live in Stamford, CT only afford to live here if they live in low-income housing or get section-8 assistance. Section 8 assistance is help paying your rent when you make a salary below the poverty level or not enough to support your family size.
Some facts about Connecticut and Poverty:
In 2010, nearly 1 in 10 residents had incomes below the Federal Poverty Line (FPL), about $11,000 for an individual or $22,000 for a family of four. This report, as more fully explained below, refers to those subsisting below the FPL as “Very Poor”. In 1990, 217,300 Connecticut residents met this definition, making up 6.8% of the state’s population. Throughout the 1990s the number of Very Poor grew 19%, accounting for 7.9% of all state residents. The 2000s saw a continuation, even a quickening, of this trend. The number of Very Poor increased 21% during the 2000s to over 314,000 people, accounting for 9.2% of Connecticut’s total population." - Rose Gautrau

"I chose the website National Center for Children in Poverty this week to look further into.  I was impressed with the wealth of information presented!  I chose my home state of Ohio to look for more information about with the demographics tool.  I was amazed at the statistics presented there.  I had no idea that 44% of Ohio children live in a low-income family.  It also offered other information about my home state, with relation to parental employment and marital status, and much more.  I'm not sure what else to share about poverty specifically.  The school district that I teach in has a wealth of low-income families.  We offer a free breakfast/lunch program to those who qualify based on income level, and work hard to reach those families in low-income situations.  Our district is one of the lower-income districts in the state of Ohio.  We are a large district, and very rural.  Many of the parents are not working or unable to work.  Some of my students do not have good hygiene because it is not stressed or helped at home.  Many of the parents I work with are unable to read or follow very basic written directions while working with their own children.  I hope this information is helpful!" - Kathryn Turner

blog contact set up for course 6162

Wow, I am a student out of U.S. is an advantage and also a disadvantage to me.

I clarify with the professor the criteria of searching for the post partner, and started to look for early childhood professionals.

I posted an invitation in the blog area and discussion area as well. There are two colleagues approaching me, Kathryn and Rose. I am so happy to have them as my contacts.

 Part 2:

I like to explore more in Association for Childhood Education International. I am working in an international education organization in Beijing, and we have more than 700 students from above 55 countries. I would like to understand more about international education.

My Supports

As social beings, no human can live without interaction and support from others and also from the environment, especially in such a “global village” time. As emotional beings, people like to get emotional support which is much different from other animals.
We have different kinds of identities in this world. We are children of our parents, we are parents of our children, we are students in the school, we are friends, lovers, colleagues, staffs, different nationalities etc.
For me, in a daily base, I need the support from my parents-in-law, who help me take care of my son at home, so that I can work at ease. I talk to my husband when I face challenges or obstacles at work. I buy groceries from the stores. I go to the supermarket, bread stores and the fruit store to buy the food and other things. I need my colleague’s support at working place, like IT technology, property management people to clean the office, and the doorman to take care of the security of our building. There are so much we need from all the people around us.
Imagine I need to find a new job. I will need my family to support my daily living, I need friends to help me searching new opportunities, I need internet to search for new opportunities, I need my friends and my family to understand me and support me emotionally.

My Connection to Play

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”
― Plato

“Have regular hours for work and play; make each day both useful and pleasant, and prove that you understand the worth of time by employing it well. Then youth will bring few regrets, and life will become a beautiful success.” - Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

I lived in a small village with my families till I was 10 years old, and all the close relatives staying in the same village or the close villages. At that time in the small village, the adults did not have serious request or high expectations to the children, and the school teachers distribute few homework to the students as well. So, as a student and a child, I felt very free and few pressure from the adults about the academic issue.

The traditional play I loved so much when I was young was: playing shuttlecock, skipping rope and hopscotch during the break in the school. When I was young, there was no place to buy real shuttlecock, I made it by myself. I found one or two copper cashes and cut suitable length of the nylon rope to make a shuttlecock for myself.

During the weekend and holidays, I will go to the riverside, climb trees to fetch apples or other fruit, swim in the shallow spring(it's like take a bath there), sit in the rice field watching the floating clouds shaping differently, go to fetch wild grass for the pigs etc..

Now I am living in Beijing for more than 13 years now, my son was born here. As I observed the children play, they have to choose play center or the small space in the living compound or play in the classrooms or in the parks. It's such a pity that I feel like they are away from nature. Being away from nature is very bad for the children since their sensory can not be developed fully or they lose the connection with real life. I do hope the adults and authorities will provide more natural places for the children to play.

Play is so important in my life. It develops my imagination, my physical health, my knowledge to myself, to the world and others when I was young, and till now as an adult, I still love play. It makes me feel ease and colorful of my life, and it is like the lubricant to make myself more complete as a human being.

Relationship Reflection

Human Beings are born to be social creature, we live in the relationships with other human beings. No one can live without others' support and service.

Relationships with others take me many benefits and support my life in every aspect like my family life, my friendship with others, and my career development. I like to talk about 3 people in my life relating to family life, friendship and work here to reflect the relationships with them and the relationships support my life.

First and most importantly is my relationship with my son. His born changes my life totally. He is 31 months now, and attach to me a lot. I am his game partner, mother, friend, princess, teacher and student. He is my teacher, my heart, my son, my mentor who help me to reflect my own growing path, healing my hurts during my growing up and develop healthy and love relationship with family members. Every day I do my best to find time play games with him, focus on him and let him feel my love in many ways, like eye contact, kiss him, hug him, and say to him I love him. I care for him and now he cares a lot about me.

About friendship, I have a good friend whose name is Libby Long, we have friends for more than 15 years, she means a lot to me. We meet each other from time to time, talking about our own life, sharing everything with each other, we sometimes stay over in each other's home. She supports me with my confusions about my relationship with my husband and others, my emotion, and always let me feel I am strong and capable. The special thing of this friendship is trust, we trust each other and don't care to share our weakness and ugly, we always think about each other.

About work relationship, I love to talk about my relationship with Dancy, who is my assistant, my good friend and best work partner in the work. I am so lucky to have her with me. She is very considerable and support my work a lot. She never bargain that she does too much, never complain. She is always with big smile to everyone and everyone like her since she is sweet and lovely. From my side, I support her work a lot, give her suggestions about how to deal with different people and balance different task, always tell her don't make herself too much tired, and if anything I can help with, don't hesitate to come to me. But I seldom pass the line to do things for her which is her responsibility.

For keeping the healthy and positive relationships with people, there are some challenges. Everyone is with different temperament, and have different needs from time to time, it is difficult to get their needs properly. Sometimes life change, the friends we have will leave us, or if we live in a different place, it's difficult to see each other and the friendship might be lost. Also with family members like my brother, I love him and care him a lot, but I feel I cannot help him a lot since I am far away from him. And sometimes in life, it's difficult to balance the time to the people in relationships with me.
